Slow stitching, intuitive stitching, fabric collage. There are lots of names for the process of sewing without instructions. We, of all people, are not out to break that tradition. Beg if you like, but we won't TELL you tell you what to do with the fabrics in your beautiful bundle.
But we will tell you they are 100% upcycled fabrics, all thrifted locally and washed before being cut into useable pieces. So, whatever you make, you will be starting from a good place. You might even recognize a piece of your neighbor’s curtains, or a bit of an old table cloth you donated.
And, we will tell you what we would do if we came across a bundle of diverse fabrics such as the one you've got.
1) If we were making a pillow, we’d choose a piece for the back and set that aside. Probably that piece the bundle is wrapped in, but, that's just us.
2) We'd cut most of the rest into smaller pieces, either at the beginning or as we go.
3) Here's the scary part. We’d find two pieces that don’t want to go together, overlap them by at least half an inch (putting one right on top of the other) and join them with a decorative zig-zag stitch.
4) We'd probably be disappointed in how that looks but we'd keep going. We're Curious and Stubborn. We'd add fabric in every direction. If we were sewing by hand and our goal was something to be worn or sat on or leaned against, we would press the edges under to avoid fraying. We might even try a no-sew iron on fabric adhesive.
5) We'd cut our fabric mosaic and our backing to size, put them right sides together an sew around three sides and part of the fourth, leaving an opening on that last side just big enough to fit a hand through. We'd snip off the corners, turn the whole thing right side out and stuff it. You can use whatever you like as no stuffing was included in your kit. Maybe you have a tired old pillow at home. Or a toy the dog ate the legs off of. We buy pillows at the thrift store, put them through the washer the pull out the fiberfill.
6) We'd hand sew the opening using a (practically) invisible stitch.
7) We might sew a button on each side. We might not.
8) We would feel very satisfied with ourselves and go have a cup of tea.
